Iconic Representation

Both the sentence ‘the cat is on the mat’ and a picture of the cat on the mat represent the cat as being on the mat. But they do so in different ways. What is the difference between these two, symbolic vs. iconic (or “pictorial”), ways of representing? The workshop brings together scholars from Philosophy, Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, and the study of Art with the aim of investigating the nature of iconic representation, whether iconic representation comes in degrees, how iconic representation relates to analog representation and to depiction, and the purposes and uses of iconic representations.
