Pather Panchali/Song of the Little Road

Based on Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s landmark 1929 novel, Pather Panchali is both Satyajit Ray’s first film and the opening to his Apu Trilogy, helping to establish “parallel cinema” as a Bengali counterpart to Hindi and Tamil masalas. Iconic images of modern trains stand for both integration and alienation as the film tells the story of the Roy family’s move from their ancestral village to Varanasi. (Director: Satyajit Ray | India | 1955 | 115 Minutes | Bengali w/ English Subtitles)
